Social Security Commissioner Michael Astrue Issues Important Statement on Disability Claim Backlog

Eliminating the backlog of Social Security Disability claims is a moral imperative, according to a recent report issued by SSA Commissioner Michael J. Astrue to Social Security lawyers throughout the country.  We agree!  Too many disabled Americans are suffering financially while they wait for a Social Security hearing.

The Commissioner has asked disability attorneys and great organizations such as NOSSCR to help in realizing this goal. We stand ready to assist as long as due process is protected.  Click here for a summary of the Commissioner's report.

Please help. I suffered from an anuerysm to the brain in March of 2005. My cognitive abilities were greatly effected. I suffer from high blood pressure, seizures, fibromyalgia, left nerve damage, a degenerated disc in my neck and in my lower back. I have dizzy spells, sleep apnea and suffer from migraine headaches and I have been denied my social security, appealed and now I am awaiting a hearing date. I applied in January of 2007 and my hearing date was accepted in October of 2007. Here in the state of South Carolina there is a backlog for hearings for another 22 months so we are looking at approximately getting a hearing in October of 2009. I have lost my home, I have lost my transportation, I am about to loose my health insurance because I cannot afford to pay $6.50 per month because I have no income. My doctors are cutting me off because I have no money to pay my pass due balances for the services that I despartely need. Even with insurance I cannot afford to pay the co-pays on my medications because I have no income and I am awaiting for my social security hearing.Currently I am on 7 medications that I can no longer afford. My blood pressure is up, the financial stress that I am under is affecting the fibromyalgia and I am not improving. I am only 44 years old and I have worked since I was 13, and the government is taking their time while my health is declining. Please do something in the State of South Carolina so that I will not suffer another stroke of the brain or die waiting on my social security.

My husband is sick with pancreatic cancer which is on the list of Compassionate allowances benefits. On Social Security on line web site the article states "Social Security has an obligation to provide benefits quickly to applicants whose medical conditions are so serious that their conditions obviously meet disability standards"
In my local social security office(Somerville, NJ)I was told to wait just for appointment a month and about 6 month for evaluation and decision, etc. He has pancreatic cancer and may be won't live for 6 months? Where is the heart? He can't continue working and needs financial assistance but i was told that because he makes over 900 a month he is not qualified for social security disability benefits?
Could someone advice me what to do and whom i have to approach in order to get help...
